Bradford City 1-0 Northampton Town

Another step closer to a playoff spot as Bradford city see out Northampton

Yesterday was a massive result for City. It was a must win game against a side much lower in the league, and that is exactly what we got. a 1-0 win, and a 7 point gap between us and 7th now stands.

It wasn’t pretty and both sides didn’t really create much, but all that matters is it’s a win for City at this important stage of the season. In a match with very few clear cut chances, there were a few points as to why we won.

Firstly, good finishing makes the world of difference in both games like this, and where we will finish this season. Bobby Pointon did well to keep the ball in play to cross to Stephen Humphrys, brought back into the starting lineup in place of Ethan Wheatley, who was able to head in from a couple of yards out on the 15th minute.

I’ve found Humphrys quite frustrating this season in terms of his decision making, but when he produces quality moments like this he is really good to this team.

We didn’t really create much at all for the rest of it, however Jenson Metcalfe had a good effort in the second half that deserved better, however it was straight at the Northampton keeper. On another day it probably goes in.

Northampton on the other hand weren’t overly bad, but they were effectively toothless. nothing up front was really sticking for them, and they couldn’t finish chances that came their way. Their best chance of the game for me came in the second half through Dean Campbell who hit the bar from a half volley. It was hit brilliantly, but overall it showed that the luck was on our side.

Whilst the goal will always grab the headlines, the defending from Aden Baldwin, easily my man of the match yesterday, was absolutely fantastic. As the second half was coming to a close, he produced a brilliant last man challenge in the penalty area to stop a certain goal, and everyone around the ground stood and celebrated this like City had scored another goal.

This season from Baldwin has been unbelievable. I remember after his needless red card against Doncaster in the run in last season everyone wanted him gone, myself included. But this season? he’s definitely redeemed himself, and has turned into one of, if not our best centre halves with his defensive ability and range of passing, and overall he is a massive part of this team.

To sum up, it was not our best performance of the season, but most importantly, a win is a win.  City currently sit fourth on 68 points, just one point off Bolton. This is much better than anyone ever expected this season, but we just need to finish there now.
